Correct reconstitution technique

  • Let the lyophilized vial reach room temperature before adding diluent.
  • Swab both stoppers with alcohol and introduce water down the vial wall, never directly onto the powder cake.
  • Swirl gently until clear — never shake, which shears peptide bonds and causes foaming.
  • Label the vial with concentration and reconstitution date.
  • Store the reconstituted vial at 2–8°C protected from light.

Sterile water contains no preservative, so a reconstituted vial should be used immediately in a single session. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which suppresses microbial growth and allows a reconstituted vial to be drawn from repeatedly over roughly 28 days under refrigeration.

Which reconstitution water should be used for multi-draw research vials?

Bacteriostatic water. Any protocol where the same vial is accessed more than once benefits from the preservative; sterile water is reserved for single-session work or where benzyl alcohol would interfere with an assay.

How much water is used to reconstitute a peptide vial?

Diluent volume sets concentration, not dose. A 10mg vial with 2mL of water yields 5mg/mL, so 10 units on an insulin syringe equals 0.5mg. Use the calculator below to convert any strength and volume into unit marks.

How should reconstitution water be stored?
