What bacteriostatic water actually is
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol suppresses bacterial growth, which is what allows a reconstituted peptide vial to be used across multiple draws over 28 days instead of being discarded after one. Sterile water for injection (SWFI) has no preservative — once punctured, it is single-use.
For research reconstitution work where a vial is accessed more than once, bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent.
What separates good bac water from bad bac water
There are only a handful of things that matter, and none of them are branding:
- USP-grade sterile fill. The water should be compounded and filled under sterile conditions in a licensed facility, not bottled in a warehouse.
- Exactly 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Under-dosed preservative doesn't hold bacteriostasis for 28 days. Over-dosed preservative can interfere with sensitive peptide work.
- Butyl rubber stopper with an aluminum crimp seal. Cheap stoppers cored by a needle shed particulate and break the seal.
- Legible lot number and expiration date etched or printed on the vial, not on a sticker that peels.
- A COA or fill record on request. If the seller cannot produce one, they are reselling unknown material.
- Clear, particle-free solution. Hold it to light. Any haze, floaters, or discoloration means discard.
10 mL vs 30 mL
10 mL vials are the common research format and match the 28-day preservative window well — most researchers finish a 10 mL vial inside that window. 30 mL vials are cheaper per mL but frequently expire mid-use, which wastes more than the savings. Unless you are reconstituting high volumes weekly, 10 mL is the better value in practice.
Who has the best bacteriostatic water?
The honest answer: the best bac water is whichever USP-grade, 0.9% benzyl alcohol, sterile-filled product you can trace to a lot number and a licensed compounder. There is no proprietary formula — the specification is fixed. What varies is whether the seller actually meets it.

If a company publishes lot-level COAs for its compounds, it is applying the same traceability standard to the water it ships. Sellers who treat bac water as an afterthought accessory typically source it from whoever is cheapest that month.

Storage and handling
Store unopened vials at controlled room temperature (20–25°C), out of direct light. After first puncture, mark the date on the vial and discard 28 days later regardless of remaining volume. Swab the stopper with 70% isopropyl alcohol before every draw and let it dry. Never re-enter a vial with a used needle.
Common mistakes
- Using bac water on a single-use protocol where SWFI is specified. Benzyl alcohol is not appropriate for every research application; check your protocol.
- Keeping a punctured vial past 28 days. Preservative efficacy is time-bounded.
- Shaking the peptide vial after adding diluent. Aim the stream down the vial wall and swirl gently — peptides denature under shear.
- Buying unlabeled "bac water" from a marketplace listing. No lot, no compounder, no accountability.
