How Do I Start With Peptides? A Step-by-Step Beginner's Research Guide
A practical first-order walkthrough: choosing a compound class, verifying COAs, bench kit, reconstitution, storage, and record-keeping.

Start with the paperwork, not the peptide
The most common mistake new researchers make is choosing a compound before establishing a process. A research peptide program is a documentation exercise first: sourcing, verification, reconstitution, storage, and record-keeping. Get those right and every compound you work with afterward becomes straightforward.
This guide walks through the sequence in order.
Step 1: Define the research question
Decide what you are actually measuring before you buy anything. "Trying peptides" is not a research design. A defined endpoint determines which compound class is relevant — metabolic (GLP-1/GIP/glucagon agonists), repair and recovery (BPC-157, TB-500), growth-hormone secretagogues (CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, Tesamorelin), cosmetic and cellular (GHK-Cu, Glutathione), or mitochondrial (SS-31, MOTS-c, SLU-PP-332).
Browse compound monographs at /peptide-intelligence before committing to a purchase.
Step 2: Source from a supplier that documents lots
Before your first order, ask for a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis. It should include HPLC purity with a chromatogram, mass-spectrometry identity confirmation, endotoxin, sterility, moisture, and residual solvents. A supplier that cannot produce this for your exact lot is not a research supplier.
PX1 publishes per-lot documentation at /purity-reports and /endotoxin-reports.
Step 3: Assemble the basic bench kit
You need very little to start:
- Bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) for multi-draw reconstitution
- Sterile syringes appropriate to your draw volume
- 70% isopropyl alcohol prep pads
- A sharps container
- A logbook or spreadsheet for lot numbers, reconstitution dates, and concentrations
- Refrigeration at 2–8°C for reconstituted vials
Step 4: Reconstitute correctly
Let the lyophilized vial reach room temperature. Swab both stoppers. Draw your diluent, then inject it slowly down the inside wall of the peptide vial — never directly onto the powder cake. Swirl gently until fully dissolved; do not shake. The solution should be clear and particle-free.
Use /peptide-calculator to convert vial strength and diluent volume into concentration per unit before you draw anything.
Step 5: Label and store
Write the reconstitution date and concentration on the vial. Store reconstituted peptide at 2–8°C, protected from light. Most reconstituted peptides remain stable 28 days under refrigeration; lyophilized vials remain stable 18–24 months at room temperature. Freeze-thaw cycling degrades peptides — aliquot if you need longer storage.
Step 6: Keep records
Log compound, lot number, receipt date, storage conditions, reconstitution date, concentration, and every draw. Without this, results are not reproducible and a bad lot cannot be traced.
What not to do when starting
- Do not start with three compounds simultaneously — you cannot attribute any observation.
- Do not buy from a seller with no lot documentation because the price is 40% lower.
- Do not use unlabeled or expired diluent.
- Do not skip the calculator and estimate concentrations by eye.
Where to begin
Well-characterized, extensively studied compounds make better starting points than novel ones. See the full catalog at /all-peptides.
